St Andrew-by-the-Wardrobe

United Kingdom / London, England
Location ID: #10135886

Christopher Wren church built between 1685-95. It was totally destroyed during the Blitz, and then entirely restored in the 1960s by Marshall Sisson. A simple dark redbrick building with plain tower and double row of clear glass allows maximum light penetration. The decorative Renaissance plasterwork with fruit and flowers along with spandrels containing cherubs is noteworthy. The aisles are enclosed so that with the light oak woodwork and large clear windows there is an overwhelming impression of light. The rectory house adjoining in St Andrew's Hill was built c. 1766.
