The National Maritime Museum opened in 1937. Built in 1807, it had previously been a hospital and then a school, the site now features a mix of traditional and contemporary museum and gallery spaces. In 1999 the National Maritime Museum opened a new extension, Neptune Court, designed by Richard Mather with large glass dome roof.
