Large Victorian school, built in 1856-57, and converted into a community centre in 1933. Italianate, three-storey brick building with clock tower, arched windows and ground-floor columned arcade. The interior is now modern and studio-flat like, with gym and meeting rooms. Direct access to the basement from car park. The basement contains 12 rooms (used for pottery, upholstery, light aircraft restoration, scenery). Concrete spiral staircase from ground floor to attic. Wide staircase linking ground and first floors. Wide corridors and some very narrow ones. Tunnels. The building is located next to a desolate recreation ground fenced-off by barbed-wire, and surrounded by a council estate of two-storey red-brick houses.
