Blewcoat School

United Kingdom / London, England
Location ID: #10138185

The Blewcoat School was built in 1709 and remained as a school until 1928. Inside is a single pine-panelled room with a semi-basement beneath. The turned balusters and handrails are part of the original school. The fireplace on the south wall has been restored with a new mantel shelf and stone slips. The grey and giltwork chandelier came from Bruerne Abbey in Oxfordshire. The building is constructed of red and yellow brick with rubbed brick and stone dressings. Doric pilasters support entablatures. A parapet with a plain Portland Stone coping conceals a hipped roof of slates. There is a figure of a Blewcoat Boy in the niche above the doors. The shop could double as a West End store and as the fittings are temporary, they can be removed.
