The engine house and the beam engine were built in 1884-86 and formed part of the Tottenham sewage works. The engine is some 60 metres high and over 12 metres long with a flywheel approximately 8 metres in diameter. The building comprises a large room - the engine house - and a small annexe. The engine house is a typically ornate Victorian design with fluted columns and iron staircases leading up to the top of the engine. Currently the windows are bricked up and the interior is painted white. Externally there are the remains of the original concrete settling tanks and filter beds which are now overgrown. The site is adjacent to the River Lea.
