Peter Harrison Planetarium
United Kingdom / London, England
Location ID: #10141117
The Peter Harrison Planetarium is part of the Royal Observatory complex in Greenwich Park. The new state-of-the-art planetarium is the centrepiece of the Royal Observatory's recent redevelopment, and is the only planetarium in London. It opened in 2007 and was designed by Allies and Morrison. The planetarium cone is made from nearly 250 individual bronze plates welded together and patinated to look like a single piece. The shape of the cone is related to the stars and is unique to its location in Greenwich. The top of the cone is sliced at an angle parallel to the celestial equator. This sliced plane is covered in layers of reflecting glass which offer a glimpse of the changing sky and space. Inside the cone is Europe's first digital laser planetarium projector, making possible shows which take the audiences out into space looking back at Earth, as well as the inclusion of up-to-the-minute images sent back by space probes.
