Natural History Museum - Darwin Centre

United Kingdom / London, England
Location ID: #10141220

The amazing architectural achievement of the Giant Cocoon in the Darwin Centre was unveiled in 2009. The clean white curves of the futuristic structure are encased in glass atrium that stretches over eight floors. The steel struts, reflective glass and white limestone floor and curved concrete walls create a futuristic and clean space for filming. The state of the art Darwin Centre features a 65-metre-long, eight-storey-high cocoon, both symbolically and actually providing protection to the collections housed within. Designed by C F Møller Architects of Denmark, the eight-storey cocoon is the largest sprayed concrete, curved structure in Europe. The cocoon's surface is 3,500 square metres of hand-finished polished plaster, bound in steel channels resembling silk threads. The 30 steel columns are each 28m long. The atrium's stone floor is natural Portland limestone. The building is designed to high sustainability standards, including thermal insulation for the collections and an innovative lighting system to save energy. The west facade casts dramatic shadows on the cocoon throughout the day, highlighting its curved form. Please see Natural History Museum for full details and more images of the mainmuseum.
