St Lawrence Jewry Church

United Kingdom / London, England
Location ID: #10141342

St Lawrence Jewry Church is the official church of the Lord Mayor of London and City of London Corporation, and is situated in the yard of the Guildhall. The present church was rebuilt by Sir Christopher Wren; work began in 1670 and was completed in 1677. During World War II, the church was extensively damaged, subsequently restored in 1957 and is Grade I listed. The church has a grand east front on which four Corinthian columns support a pediment. Like most Wren churches few walls are at right angles. It has a spectacular white interior with gold-leaf and chandeliers, and a grand organ fitted in 2001. The church was described by Sir John Betjeman as "very municipal, very splendid."
