Description:
Sir Christopher Wren rebuilt St James Garlickhythe, famed for possessing one of the City's most ornate and beautiful steeples, between the years 1676 and 1683. Built from Portland stone, the exterior of the church is deceptively simple. Inside the Baroque influence becomes apparent. The use of classical columns and ceilings of different heights give the interior the effect of aisles and central transepts. In the west gallery of the church is the organ. Much of the woodwork of the church is dark and sombre, but Wren's use of large windows of plain glass has created a gloriously bright atmosphere.
