Description:
Sir Christopher Wren's Cathedral Church. Features of the cathedral include the crypt, the second largest dome in Europe, the Quire with Victorian mosaics and wood carving by Grinling Gibbons, the cathedral floor, triforium, wood-panelled rooms, geometric staircase, Whispering Gallery and two external galleries. Opposite the cathedral there is a Chapter House with two wood pannelled rooms - one large, one small - that can be hired when there are no meetings. The reception and staircase is potentially available at weekends when not in use. The Chapter House is used as offices Monday to Friday. More detail: the following are currently not open to the public - except for school trips now and then so filming more possible - The Geometric staircase - grand, wide and very high stone staircase - weight restriction does not allow dolly and track; The Triforium - which is the first level up - access via lift - has a north triforium gallery which is large, wide with disused font and pulpit; On the west pediment, halfway up and outside filming is possible if harnesses are worn, views of Ludgat Hill from here; Trophy Room - houses Wren's impressive model of the cathedral; Library - see separate locations record for this; Lapidarium - displays historical stone from the cathedral The following are open to the public so filming more restrictive: Ground floor cathedral; The Crypt - houses tomb of Wren and luminaries of the arts and military including Wellington's and Nelson's tombs. There are a number of galleries to St Paul's, the first being the Whispering gallery, the highest is the Golden Gallery. Access is very restricted, 434 very narrow steps, with very low ceilings. Panoramic views over London from Golden Gallery, however, are magnificent. St Paul's inhouse caterers are happy to cater for crews and there are green room spaces available. Temple Bar - which has a little room in the arch from which good close up views of the cathedral. Owned by the City of London but managed as a corporate space by St Paul's.
