Description:Built 1812 - 1815, this Georgian building was designed by James Lewis. It was originally the Bethlem Royal Hospital or Bedlam and became the Imperial War Museum in 1936. Although the iconic dome, designed by Sidney Smirke, was originally added in 1846, it was completely reconstructed after a major fire in 1968. The building was renovated by Arup and Associates in 1989 to include the diagonal-latticed barrel-vault roof which creates the Museum's present day Atrium. The Imperial War Museum is of interest to filmmakers due to its unique coupling of modern and historical architectural highlights. The Museum also houses over 20 exhibition areas from art galleries to full reconstructions including a Western Front trench. It also contains an extensive array of artifacts, artwork and documents relating to the First and Second World Wars and most modern conflicts. The space boasts 2 Georgian-style meeting rooms, a conference room, and a reading room located in the reconstructed dome.
