Description:Thames Barrier is the very large flood defence asset comprising tunnels with cabling, stairways and machinery. Also offices, canteen, information and learning centres and ground with river views. A defence of moveable gate with striking hoods which shelter the machinery operating the rocker beams. The hoods are shaped like primitive helmets; the wooden frames of Iroko hardwood and European pine are protected with a quilted outer covering of strips of stainless steel, reminiscent of the armour worn by a Samurai warrior. The interior is a mass of bright yellow piping and vast tunnelling metal stripes which flank the corridors.
