Description:Victoria Embankment is part of the Thames Embankment, a road and walkway along the north bank of the Thames, extending from the City of Westminster into the City of London. It starts at Westminster Bridge, then follows the course of the river bank north, past the Golden Jubilee Bridges, Waterloo Bridge and ends at Blackfriars Bridge. It was completed in 1870 under the direction of Joseph Bazalgette. As well as the roads and wide pavements, two public gardens were laid out. One backs onto the government buildings of Whitehall and the other stretches from the Golden Jubilee Bridges to Waterloo Bridge. The gardens contain many statues, including a monument to Bazalgette. Ships permanently moored by Victoria Embankment include HMS President and HQS Wellington. Other attractions include Cleopatra's Needle and the Sphinx beside it.
