Aldwych is a closed station with two distinct parts; the booking office, with a circulation area; two platforms where access is by the main spiral staircase (124 steps and no lift!). Of the two platforms, one is available for hire with a working train. The other still has some original advertising on display. Aldwych represents the typical historic Tube station. It is used mainly for pre and post war settings. The station was opened as Strand station in 1907 and was renamed Aldwych in 1917. During World War II the station was used as a public air-raid shelters.
