Description:
Charing Cross Station was opened in 1864 and is a very busy commuter station during the week. Its roof is some 100ft above the tracks and comprises a single span, trussed arch with wrought iron tie rods. It is 164ft wide and 510ft long. Recent developments have completely enveloped the original building. Situated on the forecourt of the station is the Eleanor Cross, which was completed in 1865, and is considered to be at the centre of London. The Embankment Place offices were completed in 1992. The forecourt wall, railings and gates were reintroduced in the 1990s . Charing Cross offers views of the Strand from the forecourt and of the London Eye from the platforms. A modern, high-level walkway straddles the platforms, from which other London landmarks, such as 30 St Mary Axe can be viewed. Hungerford Lane, a service road to the side of the station, is also available for filming.
