Description:
Art Deco theatre designed in 1929 by Edward A. Stone as part of the Astoria Group of variety theatres; Grade II listed building originally known as the Astoria Brixton. Art Deco entrance hall, foyer and double-staircase leading to very large auditorium (15,000 sq.ft) built to resemble a Renaissance garden with plaster urns and statuary; the stage (4,800 sq.ft) has a proscenium arch based on the Rialto Bridge flanked by Italianate buildings; capacity 4,921 (3,760 standing in the Stalls, and 1083 seats in the Circle and 78 standing in the back), nine dressing rooms. Open for hire as concert hall, music venue, conferences, film and television broadcasting, reheasals.
