Description:
Peckham Library is a library and community building designed by Alsop and Stormer as an inverted L shape. It is crowned with an orange 'beret' and clad in patinated green copper, coloured glazing panels and an undulating stainless steel mesh. Steel columns support the horizontal library block, which cantilevers out from the five-storey vertical block, providing a sheltered public space at ground level. There is a double height entrance foyer. A glazed lift runs up the rear window wall of the building and gives visitors to the upper floors marvellous views across London. The library has a multi-media centre. The lending library itself is housed in the horizontal block and consists of a naturally lit double height space dominated by three huge timber clad pods on stilts, two of which punch through the roofline. Accessed by a spiral staircase from the library floor or a bridge walkway from the vertical block, the pods house a children's activity area, an African Caribbean literature centre and a meeting room.
