Description:
The museum has an Art Nouveau clock tower and two large barrel-vaulted galleries with balconies. The Natural History Gallery has a strong Victorian feel with dark wooden display cases and iron-railed balconies. Within the 16.5 acres of gardens, there are an ornate Victorian conservatory (Crystal Palace-style), a Dutch barn and a bandstand. A modern extension echoes the architecture of the original building whilst a wooden, green-roofed buliding provides a modern counterpoint. The gardens have panoramic views of London. The Horniman Museum's aquarium is one of London's oldest surviving aquaria and in 2006 a new modernised aquarium was opened. Located in the basement, it contains 15 vibrant displays including a Fijian reef, a tropical rainforest, mangrove and UK rock-pool display.
