Description:Steeped in history, being on the site of the old Whitehall Place, Sixty One Whitehall offers three impressive rooms: the Duke of Wellington Hall, the largest room; the Library, a full working military library; the Reading Room, the smallest of the rooms, but very beautiful. The Grade II listed Victorian building was built by Sir Aston Webb, who designed the main facade of Buckingham Palace. Shaped as a shield, the Duke of Wellington Hall has a high ceiling, beautifully restored polished wooden floor and a removable raised stage. With its large windows, the Hall benefits from natural light but can easily be darkened. At first floor level, above the reception area, there is a minstrel’s gallery. The Library is located above the Duke of Wellington Hall on the second floor; access to this room is via a stone and marble staircase. Semi-circular in shape, the Library benefits from plenty of natural lighting, floor to ceiling bookshelves and a gallery which runs around the upper floor. The Reading Room, also on the second floor, has impressive views over Whitehall. Features include marble floors, spiral staircases, marble fireplaces, a George III fireplace, a dome and a Laura Knight painting.
