Description:
The church was consecrated in 1864 and built by the architect Thomas Cundy Jnr in the Decorated Gothic style, built from Kentish Ragstone with Bathstone dressing. The interior remained unfinished and rather plain until "The Beautifying" in the 1880s. The galleries were taken down from the aisles and the chancel was embellished with new arcading, steps and a reredos. Extensive cleaning and interior decorative works were carried out in the 1990s and the decorated chancel roof was rediscovered. The current layout of the church consists of a nave with six bays and a tower to the north west. A glass porch encloses the west door. There is a narrow garden area around the church including flowerbeds and an area set aside for the interment of ashes. The spire was the tallest in London in the 1860s and is a visible landmark in Pimlico today. The clock, by Smith of Derby, is original as is one of the bells. The interior has good proportions, an airy spaciousness and excellent acoustics. The walls are plastered and whitened and the floor paved with alternating red, black and buff tiles. The organ was built in 1854 by Hill and is listed. There is a small chapel in the north aisle containing an oak altar relocated from the Mission Church of the Holy Name, Aylesford Street. The fine east window is by Clayton & Bell and is a dominant feature in the church along with the fine rood screen and font. The church has numerous windows which means on a sunny day can make the church beautiful, bright and airy. However on darker nights, being of a Gothic style, the church can be dark, elegant and haunting.
